Invention of Love

Hauntingly beautiful. This animation is one of my favorite animated short films that I happened to discover a year ago by chance. I love the unique style that can’t be put into better words but is “steampunk romance.” I love the form of shadow art that created this breathtaking masterpiece. It’s one of those films that you can’t take your eyes off of and don’t mind re-watching over and over again. Enjoy!

  1. I like the stream of memory, the flashback coming into being by the smell of a flower. There is beauty too in the flight of the mechanical horse. The contrast between the romanticism of the scene and the tick-tock of the machine is ingenious. The ethereal feel of the clouds, the bluish light parted by the warmth of an orange sun, all beautiful. I also liked how the story moved from the extraordinary to the domestic, and then of course there is the music, very atmospheric. It transports. The torment induced by a realisation that man has replaced nature – breath-taking. It made me think of Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein. The woman’s capacity to actually create life, denied by a mad scientist who could wanted to become a creator himself. Alone rather than in concert with another.
Thank you again for sharing. A little gem x
